Graphic Sources and Outline Preparations

4/17/13: Late last week, we sent our Portland counterparts interview questions and the answers to our questions have been coming in all week. We have already received wonderful responses from a wide range of Portlanders, including people associated with Trimet, Multnomah County, Portland Parks and Recreation, City Hall, The Oregonian, US Fish & Wildlife, Portland Farmers Market, Friends of Trees, and the Urban Farm Store, as well as many local musicians, artists, chefs, landscape architects, non-profit workers and business owners!

We are discussing graphic sources, and how authors can use things like maps, diagrams, drawings, graphs and tables to provide additional information for readers:

During choice time, students are creating images that will accompany guidebook articles:

As part of this week’s homework, students crafted brief ‘guidebook-style’ articles that outlined our classroom as a destination:

Over the next few days we will dissect more guidebook articles, discuss persuasive writing and organizational strategies, and use our research notes and interviews to begin outlining our main guidebook articles.
